Read full description of the books:
Every once in a while we read a book that profoundly affects the way we perceive our lives. A NEW DAWN IN DEER ISLE is one of those rare books.
A common man of modest means, world-weary George McLast decides to forget all his problems and take the trip him and his beloved wife had only dreamed about before she passed away three years earlier. Despite all the unnerving feelings he’s been getting in his chest, his son’s disapproval, and his precarious financial situation, he sets out across America following the same route John Steinbeck took in 1959 with his pet poodle, Charley. And as the legendary author wanted to do back then, George hopes to reacquaint himself with his country and its people.
But everything doesn’t work out as planned. Along the way George encounters far more than he had bargained for. And so will readers. During his many adventures and mishaps you’ll feel like you’re right alongside him, in the passenger seat of his old van. And you will not only read his words you’ll learn from them as well.

Read information about the authorIt has been said in the Winton family that the day Tom was born a ferocious blizzard bore down on New York City. And that while in labor, his mother--her head down alongside his father--forged her way through near-blinding white snow to a Queens subway station where the two boarded a train to a Manhattan hospital. It has also been said that the doctor who later that day delivered Tom had to smack him on the behind three times before he'd cry.
At the only PTA meeting his parents ever attended, his third grade teacher told them, "Tommy can do anything he wants to. But he must be pushed." But Tommy didn't like to be pushed. And some things never change. He has always been a free spirit--doing what he wanted, when he wanted. As a result of his adventuresome nature, he's lived a life of erratic twists and turns. And that is what today gives him a bottomless well of experiences to draw from when he sits down to write novels.
Winton has done everything from pounding spikes on a rowdy railroad gang in the Colorado Rockies to driving a taxicab in some of New York City's most dangerous neighborhoods. He's also been a Manhattan sales executive, a ditch digger/pipe installer in Florida, a house painter on Long Island, a go-for in Maine, an entrepreneur and a host of other things. Along with his wife and their Jack Russell Terrier, Ginger, he now lives a more toned down life somewhere in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains.
Listed several times as one of Amazon's top 100 "Most Popular Authors" in both
