Read full description of the books:
The tension between saying humorous and or just plain goofy things, and serious, profound stuff is something I enjoy immensely. Mike Young, in his Big Lucks chapbook Who Can Make It, hits that sweet spot like a pro.
"It’s okay if we all sing," Young says in "American Idyll," a poem punning on the TV show, its silliness but also it’s serious consequences for contestants. Because whether we’re good or bad, make fools of ourselves or "win,” as Young puts it, "There is no next round." For any of us. Period. End of poem.
The same applies to things on a global level. “After the relevance of that / long line has passed, this pit in Turkmenistan will still be / on fire, a natural gas cavern sparked by the Soviets.” That long line before? It had to do with “the president hustling for / LeBron to join the Bulls.” World leaders are wasting energy on frivolous abuses of power or are (literally) burning the place/world down.
Also the title: it reminds me a bit of Claudia Rankine’s Don’t Let Me Be Lonely and her riff on the idea of how we say people who are dying aren’t “going to make it.” “Where,” she asks, “not going to make it where?…the next day, hour, minute, or perhaps the next second.”
Which is not to Young’s poems are hopeless. Quite the contrary. These poems are filled with real joy and love and hope, more than you’ll find from most other poets.
But the question: Who can make it? It’s a serious one. In Rankine, no one can, which strictly speaking is true. In Young, there’s something more hopeful because, as the poet himself says, “I’m so anti-/disgust that amazement wells in me like a sentimental / James Bond villain.”
It’s that amazement that carries us through. Some of us will make it…maybe. Some of us won’t (whatever that means). But for all of us, amazement is ours for the taking/experiencing.
